From staff reports

Hall of Fame Grossmont College men’s water polo coach Ty Lackey has been named the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference’s All-Sports Coach of the Year.

“Being named PCAC coach of the year is a great honor,” Lackey said. “I’m very thankful for the recognition and can honestly say it speaks to the hard work and dedication of my athletes. I hope that this recognition brings more attention to the aquatics program here at Grossmont, and the good work we are doing.”

The Grossmont Griffins completed the 2021 fall season ranked No. 4 statewide and won at least 20 matches for the second time in three years. The team came in third place in the Southern California Regional Championships, held last November at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. The Griffins had four Pacific Coast Athletic Conference First Team selections, two Second Team selections and one Conference Player of the Year.

It got even better in the spring when Lackey, who earned All America honors as a player at both Grossmont College and UC San Diego, was inducted into the California Community College Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

A special education teacher at Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, Lackey was hired as a Grossmont College assistant coach in 2013. He took over the top spot after coach Brian Harvey retired two years later.

This was the third time Lackey earned Coach of the Year honors at Grossmont, but the first time he has captured Coach of the Year honors across all sports.

Grossmont is scheduled to open the 2022 season with an alumni game at Granite Hills High School on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 5 p.m.

The Griffins will play three games at Saddleback College on Aug. 27 before participating in the Southwestern College tournament Sept. 3. Grossmont will engage Citrus and Crafton Hills Sept. 10 at Palomar College.

The Griffins’ PCAC foes for this season include Crafton Hills, Palomar, San Diego Mesa, Southwestern and San Diego Miramar.

The PCAC championship tournament is scheduled Nov. 4-5 at SWC.
