Pastor Miles McPherson stated that he has been planning on expanding the Rock Church to East County for “one to two years.” And that he did, with the official groundbreaking event being held on March 10 at the old Michael’s location in El Cajon.
Food trucks, music, a kids area, a good showing from the El Cajon City Council members and hundreds of church attendees helped celebrate the event.

El Cajon campus Pastor Ricky Page noted that the new branch will have a live-streaming of the service with the “same church, same vision” mindset of the church’s Point Loma location.
The Rock, with attendees now numbering close to 13,500 according to Page, will start by building community outreach groups in East County to prepare fully for its opening which is anticipated to happen in late summer or early fall.
Page also noted that this is “a great milestone to all of the East County members especially with the rising price of gas.” Apparently 30 percent of their current members reside in East County.
Kim Reed, a Spring Valley resident and regular church attendee, explained that she was “ecstatic” when she learned of the expansion plans.
Reed explained that she likes McPherson’s way of teaching and noted that her favorite phrase of his is “Put your booty back, or sit back in your chair and listen.”
According to Reed, she “bounced around to other churches, but eventually landed at The Rock and particularly enjoys the children’s ministries.”
Page said that the church offers a number of break-out groups, which focus on everything from substance abuse classes to surviving divorce.
Volunteer Brenda Stewart, who has been attending the Rock Church for two years and was working at the community group table that day, explained she enjoys that the church also offers opportunities for small groups to get together to “learn about God.”
Souvenir parts from the building’s beams were made available to attendees.
While the old Michael’s location dealt with crafting, the facility’s new tenant population is excited to work toward crafting a whole “new Rock experience for East County residents.” Pastor Miles’ goal is to provide a positive one for the new location’s members and attendees.
