Deputies in shooting ID’d

Deadly Accident

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department this week publicly identified two deputies involved in a Feb. 16 shooting in El Cajon.

Deputies David Lovejoy and Jonathon Young were placed on administrative duty at the Lakeside substation while detectives from the El Cajon Police Department investigated an incident that sent one suspect and a National City police detective to the hospital.

At the request of detectives from the Regional Auto Theft Task Force, Lakeside deputies pulled over Erik Talavera, 31, in the 1100 block of Decker Street on suspicion of pulling a stolen trailer.

Authorities said that as Talavera exited his vehicle deputies thought he had a gun. They also said that Talavera did not comply with verbal commands and deputies opened fire during the stop, wounding the man.

Deputies on the scene later determined Talavera did not have a gun but was in possession of a knife.

During the incident a detective from the task force sustained a minor gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital, where he was later released.

Talavera also was treated at the hospital for gunshot wounds and remains in custody. —A.H.F
