The 2012 high school football season was memorable not just because the Madison Warhawks captured the State Bowl Division III championship game, thus becoming the sixth San Diego Section team to win a state bowl title.
It was more than just about winning — or losing.

The San Diego Chargers once again sponsored a Coach of the Week award, with the weekly winner receiving a donation of $1,500 for their respective high school football program.

The San Diego Chargers once again sponsored a Coach of the Week award, with the weekly winner receiving a donation of $1,500 for their respective high school football program.

The award spanned 13 weeks and was announced on KUSI-TV’s “Prep Pigskin Report.” Two winners were from Grossmont Conference programs: Tom Karlo of the Grossmont Foothillers and Charles Bussey of the Valhalla Norsemen.

Grossmont (9-3) advanced to the Division I semifinals while Valhalla (9-4) advanced to the Division II semifinals to cap exemplary playoff runs.

The Chargers formally recognized the coaches, including Coach of the Year David Dunn of Lincoln, at their final regular season game Dec. 30 against the Oakland Raiders.

State Bowl
Madison and Santa Fe Christian were the only two San Diego Section champions to qualify for the 2012 regional state playoffs. Both teams won their regional playoff games — Madison topping host Monrovia, 21-17, and SFC defeating Rio Hondo Prep, 30-28, in a game replete with fog.

The state bowl games took place Dec. 14-15 at the Home Depot Center in Carson. Madison completed a 14-1 season with an exciting 38-35 victory against Marin Catholic while SFC ended its season with a 66-7 setback to Modesto Central Catholic in the Division IV championship tilt.
Pierre Cormier rushed for 252 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Madison.

The Warhawks join an impressive list of San Diego state bowl champions that includes Oceanside (2007 and 2009), Cathedral Catholic (2008), Bishop’s (2010) and Helix (2011).
