Dr. Jeff Gray and his wife Mary (left) decided proceeds from this year’s “Smiles for Life” annual fundraiser to benefit children’s charities would go to STAR/PAL, a local nonprofit organization and San Diego Chapter of the Police Athletic League. During a recent STAR/PAL Padres baseball camp at Kuhlken Field in La Mesa, the Grays presented a check for $10,000 to Claire O’Leary (right) STAR/PAL Partnership and Resource Coordinator.

STAR/PAL brings youths and law enforcement together to build safer communities. The organization offers free youth programming at sites all over San Diego County,

Officers of the La Mesa police department were on hand at Kuhlken Field to offer instruction in the fine arts of fielding and hitting. Chief Ed Aceves brought his glove and actively participated in the drills.

The money was raised through “Smiles for Life,” which has grown from an idea Gray had more than a dozen years ago to be a national program of the more than 800 dentist members of the Crown Council.
