Becoming a millionaire a shocking and overwhelming experience

A Southern California guest turned an $8 bet into more than $1.2 million at Sycuan Casino Resort, marking what the property says is its largest jackpot of the year so far.

For the winner, Michelle K., (who does not want to reveal her last name), the moment the machine hit felt almost unreal.

“It was honestly surreal,” she said. “At first, I just stared at the screen, trying to make sense of what I was seeing. When it finally registered that I had won more than $1.2 million, I was overwhelmed with excitement, gratitude, and disbelief all at the same time.”

Even after staff confirmed the jackpot, she said she struggled to process it.

“My first thought was that I must be reading something wrong,” she said. “Even after the staff confirmed it, I was still in shock.”

Michelle said the news quickly spread to people close to her, who reacted with disbelief of their own.

“I immediately shared the news with people close to me,” she said. “Most people had to hear it more than once before they believed it was real.”

She described the win as something she doesn’t see as luck alone, but as gratitude and timing in her life.

“I feel blessed and fortunate,” she said. “I’ve tried throughout my life to help others, be generous when I can, and put positive energy into the world. To me, this win feels like good karma and a blessing that came at the right time.”

While she did not share plans for the money, Michelle said the experience itself has been overwhelming in the best way.

Sycuan celebrated her win with a complimentary stay and spa treatment, but Michelle said what stood out most was the people.

“It meant more to me than I can put into words,” she said. “It didn’t feel like people were simply doing their jobs—it felt like friends celebrating a special moment with me.”

On the casino side, Sycuan leadership said the reaction on the floor was just as emotional.

“Myself and the Sycuan team were extremely excited for her,” said Rob Cinelli, general manager of Sycuan Casino Resort and Singing Hills Golf Club. “Seeing the look on her face was priceless. We see large jackpots all the time, but $1.2 million jackpots don’t happen often, and we love it when they do.”

Cinelli said the win reinforces the property’s identity in the region.

“I feel it means we are living up to our reputation as the luckiest casino in Southern California,” he said.

Sycuan has awarded nearly $86 million in jackpots this year, a figure Cinelli said reflects both gaming activity and guest experience.

“It further solidifies Sycuan as the luckiest casino in So Cal,” he said. “Our team is one of the best in the business, and our guests are like family, so treating them as VIPs comes naturally.”

He also pushed back on the idea that celebrations are tied to financial return.

“There’s a misnomer in the casino industry that we give large winners a reason to stay so that we get a chance to win it back,” he said. “That couldn’t be further from the truth. We do

it because we truly want their experience to be memorable.”
Cinelli said what sets Sycuan apart from other Southern California gaming destinations is service.

“We all have gaming, food, drinks, concerts, etc.,” he said.

“What sets us apart is our customer service. Our property is clean, safe, and comfortable, and our pool and lazy river are the best in town.”

He added that responsible gaming remains a priority.

“When the fun stops, we want them to stop,” he said.

Looking ahead, Cinelli said the resort’s focus remains on guest experience, community support, and continued growth.

“Our biggest priorities are guest service and giving back to the community,” he said. “Continued growth for the betterment of our San Diego community is a huge priority for us.”
