Armed Lakeside father arrested

A Lakeside woman locked herself in a bedroom with her two children hiding from the estranged father of the children who was in her home on June 14. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the domestic disturbance at the 116000 block of Hi Ridge Road in Eucalyptus Hills at about 8:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, deputies saw the suspect, Dustin Banzhof as he drove away from the residence. Banzhof attempted to evade deputies before driving back to the residence. Banzhof obtained a firearm and was believed to have shot multiple times. The confrontation culminated in a deputy-involved shooting involving one deputy before Banzhof fled back inside the resident.

The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail and Crisis Negotiations Team responded and an uncooperative Banzhof emerged from the residence around 2:30 a.m. He was taken into custody after a Sherriff’s canine made contact with him. Banzhof was arrested for multiple crimes and transported to a local hospital for treatment. No deputies were injured. The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and assumed responsibility of the investigation.

On June 14, 2020, at about 8:30 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at the 11600 block of Hi Ridge Road in Lakeside. When deputies arrived, they determined thirty-nine-year-old Dustin Banzhof battered his girlfriend who called 911. Before deputies approached the property, Banzhof drove away from his residence on Hi Ridge Road. Deputies attempted to stop Banzhof, but he failed to yield and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended when Banzhof returned to his residence.

Banzhof armed himself with a rifle and shot at deputies numerous times. The event culminated into one deputy shooting at Banzhof. Banzhof sustained one gunshot wound to his arm. Despite his injuries, Banzhof remained on the property, refused to comply with deputies, and continued to discharge a rifle.

Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail and Crisis Negotiations Team responded. At about 2:30 a.m., an uncooperative Banzhof emerged from the residence. Banzhof was taken into custody by deputies after a Sheriff’s canine made contact with him. Banzhof was arrested and transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. No deputies were injured.

Banzhof was ultimately arrested for 664 – 187(a) PC – Attempted Murder, 245(d)(1) PC – Assault on a Peace Officer with a Firearm, 2800.2(a) CVC – Felony Evading, and 243(e)(1) PC, Domestic Violence Battery.

The deputy involved in this event has been identified as Deputy Andrew Sudbury. Deputy Sudbury has been employed with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department for six years and is currently assigned to the Lakeside Substation.
