Annual Cupids and Canines Pet Adoption held at Grossmont Center

Great Pyrenees is not a “dog in a purse” breed. More like a small horse on a farm breed. But according to Kristen DeMuth who manned the Great Pyrenees booth at the 9th Annual Cupids and Canines Pet Adoption Event held on Feb. 7 at Grossmont Center, movies like “Santa Buddies” that feature Great Pyrenees help their rescue dogs get adopted. And adoption was the main objective at this event.

But according to Kristen DeMuth who manned the Great Pyrenees booth at the 9th Annual Cupids and Canines Pet Adoption Event held on Feb. 7 at Grossmont Center, movies like “Santa Buddies” that feature Great Pyrenees help their rescue dogs get adopted. And adoption was the main objective at this event.

Ivan Leetma, co-founder of San Diego Animal Support Foundation, who sponsored the event, said celebrities like Paris Hilton helped set off the dog in a purse craze when she showed off a Chihuahua in her purse a few years back.

Movies, celebrities, TV shows all can affect what breeds become popular. But thankfully the more than 150 dogs, of all breeds, had a chance at being adopted at this first ever Canines and Cupids Event to be held in East County based on true love at first sightings scenarios.

There were 17 rescue and shelter organizations for specific breeds set up in tarp tents on the northeast side of Grossmont Center’s parking lot. The opportunities for falling in love with a dog were numerous for this well attended Valentine themed adoption event.

According to Leetma the event “turned out well with a 30 percent adoption rate.” The adoptable dogs wore red-valentine colored bandanas that said, “Adopt me” and adoptive parents could take the dogs for walks around the center or play with them in small fenced in areas.

Many a child could be seen hugging a puppy or dog. Leetma said it is always good when someone chooses a senior dog because most want a puppy or younger dog.

Cupid’s arrow had already hit Lisa Arrasmith of San Diego with her selection of three Great Pyrenees as pets and even served as great accessories to her Little-Bo Peep Halloween costume.  Arrasmith also manned the Great Pyrenees Rescue booth. Typically, according to DeMuth, a Great Pyrenees can cost as much as $2,000 but at this event ran around $395 with vaccinations and neutered or spayed.

Lovable pets, at a lower price, and finding a love match for dog and owner were the order for the day at this Valentine of a different sort event. No chocolates necessary.
