The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District recently welcomed two new student trustees for the 2025-26 academic year.
Lu Tri “Vi” Huynh was elected to represent Grossmont College, and Marcelia Y. Villaseñor will represent Cuyamaca College. Elected by their peers, the trustees will attend monthly Governing Board meetings, vote on district wide matters and take part in statewide advocacy.
Huynh, a computer science major, is serving as president of the Associated Students of Grossmont College. He previously served as executive vice president, where he worked to revitalize student clubs and strengthen the Inter-Club Council. He said he chose Grossmont College for its location and later developed an appreciation for the campus community.
Huynh said he is looking forward to learning more about decision-making processes that shape the community college experience. He noted that campus engagement has not fully recovered since the COVID-19 pandemic, which he said has affected support programs, cafeteria hours and tutoring services. He also pointed to the college’s new Associate of Science and Certificate of Achievement in Applied Artificial Intelligence as an important opportunity for students.
Villaseñor, a physics major, said her experiences growing up in rural San Diego have influenced her interest in advocacy and social justice. She said she looks forward to supporting her peers and contributing to the Cuyamaca College community.
Villaseñor cited her family’s history with Cuyamaca College, where her mother and siblings also attended. Her mother was present during the oath of office ceremony, which Villaseñor described as a milestone for her family.
She said she is eager to support efforts to expand access to higher education in underserved rural communities and to help students and employees rebuild campus engagement. Villaseñor emphasized the value of mentorships in her own studies and expressed concern that changes to curriculum and potential losses in federal funding could affect campus resources.
