Friends host annual library meeting unveiling design

The community is invited to attend the San Diego County Library Casa de Oro Friends of the Library annual meeting on Oct. 15 from 5-6:30 p.m. at 9085 Campo Road in Spring Valley. San Diego County Library staff will present the final design for the new library slated for groundbreaking this winter.

The state-of-the-art facility will be built next to Spring Valley Academy near Campo Road and Conrad Drive and is scheduled for completion in 2026.

Casa de Oro Friends of the Library President Susan Nichols said the current library is about 6,000 square feet, and the new library will double in size. She said the size is determined by the county by the number of items checked out, and the number of programs in use.

“We were very undersized for the needs of the community,” she said. “Starting in 2015, when I was then president of the Grossmont/Mt. Helix Improvement Association, we advocated with supervisor Diane Jacobs, to ask for a new library, which the library staff agreed we needed.”

Nichols said with help from the Casa de Oro Alliance and then president Bob Harras, initially was finding any real estate on Campo Road that would be available to have the new location for the library.”

Nichols said several public meetings were held to find out what the public wanted in the new library and to talk about design constructs.

“The designers went and looked at the Bancroft House, and rock works around the Mt. Helix/Casa de Oro neighborhood, and used that as an element to connect the library to the community,” she said.
