San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore announced he will retire from his 51-year law enforcement career on Feb. 3.

Following Gore’s Jan. 19 announcement, San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chair Nathan Fletcher said he will call a special meeting in March for county supervisors to consider an Interim Sheriff after the election filing deadline, citing “the importance of respecting the voter’s right to choose their own Sheriff”.

Gore was appointed Sheriff in 2009 by the county Board of Supervisors, then elected to that position for three terms by county residents.
