California State Senator Joel Anderson was invited by The Arc of San Diego to tour the East County Training Center on Mar. 17 in honor of National Disability Awareness Month. Anderson presented Senate certificates of recognition to thank The Arc of San Diego and the staff of the East County Training Center for their tremendous efforts in improving the lives of children and adults with disabilities in San Diego County.

“I am so thankful to The Arc of San Diego for their investment in the people of East County and for allowing me the opportunity to recognize the unsung heroes who empower their clients to achieve their full potential. The dedication of this organization’s leadership to improving the lives of those in my district with disabilities is phenomenal and inspiring. Thank you President Schneider for everything you and your team do for our community,” said Anderson

The Arc of San Diego East County Training Center has 135 clients from all over East County including El Cajon, Santee, La Mesa, and Spring Valley. From the arts and crafts room to the computer lab, Anderson received a tour of the facilities from several Arc staff members. On this tour, Anderson enjoyed a first-hand look at how the organization provides support to disabled individuals in our communities.

“We are grateful to Senator Anderson for his unwavering support,” said David W. Schneider, President & CEO of The Arc of San Diego. “It is important that our celebration of March as National Disability Awareness Month recognizes the Senator’s leadership and commitment to empowering individuals of all abilities to be vibrant, engaged members of the community not just in San Diego but across the state.”

Following the tour, Anderson provided Senate certificates of recognition to 49 staff members to honor their selfless work in celebration of National Disabilities Awareness Month. The Arc’s East County Training Center has helped hundreds of disabled citizens in our community live dignified lives and grow personally through their four programs and countless activities, such as the “Karaoke Hour” that was happening as Anderson toured the center.

The center’s programs serve a broad range of age groups, from those just exiting the school system to seniors. Clients build skills and participate actively in the community through vocational coaching and volunteer opportunities, enjoy a variety of classes and activities like gardening, art, and exercise, and are empowered by weekly self-advocacy meetings.
