Flags, flagpoles, and what is on them are making headlines nearly every day. But the dedication of a new flagpole by the Santee Historical Society in Santee marked the special dedication to a long-time Santee resident.
On Aug. 18, a dedication ceremony and general meeting of the Society had County of San Diego Supervisor Dianne Jacob, Santee’s Vice-Mayor John W. Minto, and other community members listening to the stories of community service of Elaine Murphy, who the flagpole is dedicated to, and hearing about various, unsolidified plans for the 20 acres surrounding the Edgemoor barn.
Elaine Murphy, who passed in 2014, was the cofounder of the Santee Historical Society. Murphy was active with the society and active in many other Santee programs including the Fanita Ranch project and Santee School bond issues.
The flagpole, visible from Magnolia Street, sitting in front of the historic Edgemoor barn displays the American flag, State of California flag, and the County and City flags.
Current Historical Society president Carol Crafts and Secretary Rita Lee were on hand for comments and support as well as the Santee Chamber of Commerce’s new Chief Executive Officer Sandy Schmitt.
