Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason showered Sycuan Live & Up Close with nearly five decades of music giving flower children of the past a chance to bloom once again. Beginning with the pseudo psychedelic rhythms of Traffic, the show evolved as much as Mason has in his long career as a renowned singer, songwriter and guitarist.
Playing Traffic classics like “Medicated Goo” proved that classic rock is still alive and well today. Long lost in today’s rock, Mason delivered extreme musical hooks where his fingers flawlessly romanced the guitar with the affection of a long-time lover.
Nearly everyone was on their feet with “Feelin’ Alright,” another Traffic classic that has lived through the decades being covered by more than 40 artists and featured in several movies and commercials. But the musical jammin’ in “Pearly Queen” was a highlight of the night. With a stellar band at his side that put a fine finish to Mason’s guitar playing and his high octave octane vocals—they had the crowd on their feet, and wanting more.
Mason muscled in a couple of his debut solo hits “Only You Know and I Know” along with “World in Changes,” from his 1970 “Alone Together.”
But, Mason’s Traffic Jam World Tour did not stay in the past, yet traveled through time, showcasing his long solo career and his ability as a relevant artists in today’s rock n roll scene. With his new album “Future’s Past,” Mason infused his years of talent with some great new songs that were met with a devoted welcome from his fans with “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “World in Changes.” But, “How do I get to Heaven” was not only my favorite out of his new collection, but a favorite of the entire show. This album is a must for Mason fans and well worth listening for lovers of classic rock n roll.
