Love, whether young or old, passionate or friendly, nearly every person in the world wants to experience it. Especially teenagers who see relationships, as a right of passage into adulthood. But the expectations of young relationships can be a little much for either party involved.

Love, whether young or old, passionate or friendly, nearly every person in the world wants to experience it. Especially teenagers who see relationships, as a right of passage into adulthood. But the expectations of young relationships can be a little much for either party involved.

Being in a relationship can be a wonderful thing for high school students. You begin to create a serious bond with someone who hopefully feels the same way. This can be terrifying experience, let alone finding this special person, which can be difficult for some.

For those fortunate enough to find that lucky one they begin experience the ups and downs of young love. A relationship consist of many things, like long talks into the night, holding hands and calling each other cute nicknames. Each day spent with a significant other draws them closer together. But as time passes these innocent relationships can develop into something much more serious.

What may have once been a kiss on the cheek gradually evolves into a connection between two people that cannot be taken back. Its not news that teens are engaging in sexual intercourse, in fact teens have been having sex for years. But it has become even more prevalent an acceptable.

With girls developing faster and boys eager to step into manhood it is easy to see how having sex early on has become commonplace amongst teens. But there are some adverse effects to giving away ones body so early in life.

For teens, having intercourse can be confusing. It is an experience filled with awkward exchanges and second-guessing but it goes much deeper than that. In a time where teens are trying to find identity and it can be extremely confusing once sex is thrown in the mix. For someone who is having sex for the first time, it is difficult to determine if they are ready and if that person is the right person for first contact.

Unfortunately for many teens the answer is no. On average, about two percent of high school relationships evolve into marriage. But that does not stop teens from doing whatever their free spirits guide them to do and it is that behavior that contributes to teenage pregnancy.

This is a reality for many teenage girls who decide to have sex. Studies done by www.familyplanningplus.org suggest that nearly a third of women will become pregnant by the age of 20.

For a teen this can be one of the most terrifying things that can happen. A young mother has multiple choices. Keep the child, place the child up for adoption, or abortion—all of which can be an extreme emotional struggle. And both mother and father are expected to focus all of their energy towards providing for the child.

Many teens that have a child by choice or accident their only option is to quit school and start working to provide for the young life. But in creating a life so young they doom themselves to a life of mediocrity and stress. Many times the child of young relationships grow up with little chance to be financially secure.

As portrayed in iconic shows like “16 and pregnant,” young mothers and fathers are seen bickering and struggling to make ends meet and get enough sleep during the night to be able to wake up in the morning and make it to low income jobs.

It is not my intention to tell people how to run their relationships. Be free, enjoy being a teen and live life to the fullest. But I encourage teens reading this to be cautious and practice safe sex every time.
