The power of a dream

When asking children what they want to be when they grow up, children will often respond with “president”, “doctor”, or “astronaut” among other professions. These responses are often met with a chuckle, a gentle rub on the shoulders, and a “How adorable!”.  Generally, these goals are not taken seriously. As children mature, they are expected to stop dreaming and focus on the here and now. Consequently, children and young adults lose sight of their dreams. However, these dreams should not be taken lightly or discouraged.

A beauty of youth is the power of dreams. Everything and anything is possible until proven otherwise. Dreams hold the power to form a life and send a life on its course. However, the doubt placed on a dream will prevent its manifestation. How can one decide what’s possible without attempting the “impossible”?

Dreaming is not a vice to be frowned upon, but rather a virtue to be embraced. Many claim that dreaming is essentially a waste of time that would be much better spent “doing something”. However, dreaming of a future is the first step to attaining the future. How can a journey be travelled without a map? Similarly, how can a future be attained without a dream?

The power of a dream has been valued throughout history. Indeed, dreams create a prophecy to be fulfilled. Would Martin Luther King Jr. have led the Civil Right’s Movement without a dream? Could a man have walked on the moon without the vision to do so?

Decisions made early in life are commonly accepted as being the most important. Indeed, decisions made as a young adult establish the foundation for choices that will influence the rest of one’s life. Decisions are the manifestations of dreams, so how can monumental decisions be made without a dream to pursue? Naturally not everyone can be the president, a doctor, or an astronaut, but how do you know that you cannot unless you try? The day was meant to be lived, opportunities to be seized, and dreams fulfilled.

Dare to dream. Dream of the future you want, how you want to be remembered, what you are passionate about. Then, act. Be your dream, and do not allow the doubts of others make you doubt yourself. Young adults hold the keys to their future. They can either spend their time dismissing their ability to open the door or spend their time walking through the door.
