Rising alongside computers, it is inevitable that the computer age would soon become riddled with cyber criminals, also known as hackers. There are organizations of hackers, across the globe. Organizations such as Anonymous and Legion of Doom are quite well known, despite their anonymous nature. Whether hackers are motivated by greed or vigilantism varies between individual hackers and organizations.

Hackers with good intentions will distinguish themselves from the rest by labeling themselves “white hats.” White hat hackers are the good kind. They expose corruption, dismantle child pornography sites, etc. in the name of goodness.

However, on the other hand, we have hackers that exploit their talents in pursuit of power and money. They are commonly known as black hat hackers.

Recently, these hackers have hit as many as 150 countries with ransomware. They control and restrict access to the victims’ files and documents, until a payment is put forward. Experts claim that this attack was a result of sensitive information about NSA being shared on WikiLeaks.

The attack has gained access to more than 200k computers across the world. Russia was one of the countries that was hit the worst, alongside Taiwan and India. The hackers targeted hospitals and universities, creating an environment of urgency and panic.

Hackers are asking for $300, in Bitcoin to release their hold of the victims’ information and files.  Experts claim that the hackers could walk away with up to 1 billion dollars from the ransomware. Clearly, these black hats have no goal of bettering our society.

The computer age is still fairly new to us. It is best to stay well protected in an environment that can be easily manipulated to cause harm.
