Strength Team brings feats of evangelism to churches, schools

Want to create your own metal shaped heart? If so, you can make it yourself by doing it the way that Mike Hagen’s Strength Team does it — bend a horseshoe into the shape of a heart. Everybody loves a show and his team delivers … with a message.

The audience was offered the opportunity to practice such techniques by bending the programs handed out during the Strength Team’s recent visit to El Cajon’s Foothills Christian Church. Programs shaped like tunnels are recommended for first-time benders.

The audience was offered the opportunity to practice such techniques by bending the programs handed out during the Strength Team’s recent visit to El Cajon’s Foothills Christian Church. Programs shaped like tunnels are recommended for first-time benders.

Billing themselves as “Breaking Barriers….Building Lives,” Hagen’s professional athletes, all boasting 215 lbs. and up and numbering 10 and more, break bricks, bend horseshoes and do these feats among fire and brimstone during their show.

The Strength Team is a group of professional athletes who are also evangelists and pastors. They explained that they visit area churches and schools to share the gospel of Jesus Christ while performing their athletic feats. The team’s ministry goal is “to serve churches through evangelism.” They boast athletic backgrounds in areas such as professional and college football, power lifting, body building, baseball and wrestling.

Shawn Kelly, associate service coordinator at Foothills Church, said the team has been visiting their church annually since 1998.

The church recently hosted four of the team’s shows from Feb. 28 through March 3. Kelly pointed out that each performance had 1,000 to 1,700 attendees.

According to church volunteer Hal Blafield, “They are like a disciple group, eating together and praying together.”

The non-denominational church regularly hosts events at the campus, with the Strength Team’s appearance being one of many “soul-building, break breaking activities.”

Ripping thick phone books before and after the church’s testimonials is common for these spiritual brutes, but they were able to use their feats of strength to relay their spiritual message as well.
