Local Girl Scouts like Victoria, Adeline and Mikaela Slocum of La Mesa are out in full force, helping East County residents stock up on America’s favorite cookies. As they participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, the Slocum sisters are learning important life and leadership skills, including goal setting, decision-making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

Victoria is among San Diego Girl Scouts in the international cookie spotlight this year. She is featured in a video about using her cookie earnings to go on a Girl Scout Destinations trip to Costa Rica and Panama, where she helped protect and save sea turtles and other marine animals, and learned to scuba dive. She was part of a group of 60 local San Diegans who participated in photo and video shoots for Little Brownie Bakers (LBB), the company that supplies cookies to Girl Scouts San Diego and 75 other councils nationwide and on U.S. military bases in Europe.
El Cajon resident Mary Jean Anderson, owner/president of Anderson Plumbing, Heating and Air, is one of the highly successful businesswomen showcased in “Entrepreneur to Entrepreneur,” a video produced by LBB. In the three-minute video, Anderson and the other Girl Scout alumnae credit the cookie program with building the leadership and business skills they still use today.
All cookie proceeds stay in San Diego to help fund troop activities, service projects and outdoors adventures, as well as Girl Scout leadership programs. Cookie program funds help provide 35,000 local Girl Scouts with innovative programs in entrepreneurship, outdoors, and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Earnings also support camps, volunteer training, and the financial assistance that keeps Girl Scouting available and affordable for all.
Victoria, who is an 11th-grader at Helix Charter High School in La Mesa, is an Ambassador Girl Scout in Troop 6456. She plans to use future cookie earnings for another Girl Scout Destinations trip: this time, a horse trek in Mongolia. Victoria mentors her younger sisters, helping them make the most of their Girl Scout experiences.
Adeline, a Helix Charter freshman, is a Senior Girl Scout in Troop 6260, which is led by her mother, Anne-Lise Slocum. Her troop looks forward to investing its cookie proceeds in hiking excursions and other outdoor adventures, and badge activities, including those associated with Sow What, a program focused on healthy eating, sustainable farming practices and the science of food. As part of that experience, the girls will design and execute a related community service project.
Mikaela, who is in 7th grade, attends La Mesa Arts Academy. She and her friends in Cadette Troop 6766 plan to use their cookie earnings to participate in Girl Scouts San Diego’s Basic Backpacking training program this spring. The troop also gives back to the community through community service projects. Examples include helping Girl Scouts’ La Mesa Service Unit host a holiday event where Girl Scouts make Christmas ornaments for local senior centers.
The Slocum sisters thank residents for supporting the cookie program! Perennial favorites Thin Mints, Samoas, Do-si-dos, Trefoils, Tagalongs and Savannah Smiles are priced at $5 per box (for the fourth year). Girl Scout S’mores and gluten-free Toffee-tastic cookies are $6, due to higher production costs. Cookie customers also have the option of donating cookies to the military through Operation Thin Mint (OTM). Find details at www.sdgirlscouts.org/cookies
Girl Scouts is the best leadership organization for girls, preparing them to unleash their inner “G.I.R.L.” (go-getter, innovator, risk-taker and leader). All girls in grades K-12 and adult volunteers are welcome to participate in the cookie program, or join Girl Scouts at any time during the year.
