Following approval at last month’s (Jan. 22) City Council meeting, the city of El Cajon will now have its own community farmers market in the downtown area. The city is working with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and others to establish a certified farmers market. The downtown El Cajon Farmers Market (ECFM) is slated to launch on March 21 on Thursday evening at the Prescott Promenade, located at 201 E. Main St. in downtown El Cajon.

The market will run every Thursday (rain or shine) from 3 to 7 p.m. and will feature fresh, high quality, locally grown produce, in addition to other fresh, prepared and cooked food items.

There will be something for all ages, including art displays, family-oriented activities and a small venue for local musicians. No admission fee will be required and vendors at the market will accept all forms of payment, including Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT).

The market is seeking qualification to participate in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. The market represents an exciting opportunity for the continued revitalization of downtown El Cajon. The benefit of the farmers market is that the community can benefit from patrons purchases.

The city is working hard on growing this farmers market so it will offer the best services for the community of El Cajon. The downtown ECFM will take on a new approach at meeting the enormous potential that a farmers market can be. It is focused on enlivening and building community — from the vendors, to the residents, to local businesses and even the entire city. The ECFM takes an innovative approach to its mission. It is committed to quality and customer satisfaction while focusing on giving opportunities to underprivileged vendors, encouraging public health and embracing the diversity of the community. When one chooses to shop at the market, they are choosing to support far-reaching initiatives, which begin with their health and culminate with supporting environmental sustainability.

For example, it begins with patrons purchasing the produce, which in turn supports one’s health, since the produce is intended to be the highest quality that can be grown. No chemical pesticides or fertilizers are used, plus the items are freshly picked and full of nutrients, which helps avoid adding bad chemicals to your body. In addition, patrons also support the farmer, the local economy and sustainable farming practices. Lastly, patrons support the market, of which a small percentage of revenue goes back into the market to keep it operating.

Moreover, the market supports IRC’s Fresh Fund, a public healthy nutrition incentive program. Now the community is benefiting from your farmers market purchases. Now you have a healthy community.
