There is an eclectic charm in the heart of La Mesa Village with the culinary delight of Bo Beau Kitchen + Garden restaurant. A fusion between Bohemian stylistic atmosphere in an industrial setting and the art of fine dining, Bo Beau’s eccentric menu is more than a meal out. It is an adventure into the world of French cuisine in a charming and comfortable atmosphere.

With dinner for two the night began with cocktails. First the City of Lights, a smooth drink with vodka, sparkling wine, lemon and lavender. It was refreshing and the lavender aftertaste lingered just long enough to make the senses tingle. Another signature cocktail, Doctor’s Orders is a potion of bourbon, Benedictine and Créme de Cocoa. This delightful combination took the bite out of the bourbon, creating a perfect pairing for the food that awaited us.

Our adventure began with the pairing of Kat’s Famous Crispy Brussels Sprouts and roasted jalapeño deviled eggs. Told by Operating Partner Michelle Kveen that the two complimented each other and after this first course, we never doubted her knowledge of Bo Beau’s exquisite cuisine. Many times bitter, the Brussels sprouts were to die for, even for the unbeliever. With pancetta, Parmesan cheese, and a balsamic port reduction, the sweet and crispy dish met with perfection in the deviled eggs that had just a light bite of hot and a lot of roasted flavor.

In the next course of the meal, came a pot of garlic and tomato Moules (mussels) served with fresh bread alongside pork belly flat bread. Normally served with fries, there is an art in eating the mussels. The bread, sliced into cubes, we spread across our plates and soaked them with exquisite sauce and topped it off with the mussels. Tender, moist and delicious, the mussels melted in your mouth and the soaked bread, was a perfect way of indulging in the rich sauce that embraced the mussels in taste. Eaten alongside the shellfish extravaganza, the pork belly flat bread took the taste buds on a different road. Crispy pork belly, combined with caramelized onion, white cheddar cheese and Applewood smoked bacon, seasoned the dish well and is a great alternative dish. It was amazingly crispy and light, without the heavy side you would expect in such ingredients.

Moving on to the main course, we were served Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Spaghetti Squash. The buttermilk made the chicken very tender, able to cut with a fork and went well with the smooth mashed potatoes. The drizzle of spicy roasted red sauce added a slight tang to the meal, which the buttermilk flavor complemented. It is a dish not to miss.

For the vegetarian, the spaghetti squash was served almost as a casserole, with fresh green beans, tomatoes and just enough cheese. It is difficult to bring flavor to spaghetti squash, but Bo Beau’s Chef Benji Moore found a way to turn the dullest of ingredients into a masterpiece.

Still sipping on the beginning cocktails, came the crème de la crème of desserts. Chocolate cake served with vanilla ice cream and a spiced bread pudding topped with a cinnamon whipped topping. The chocolate, oh the chocolate was so rich, yet irresistible with its crème brulee like center. And the bread pudding, alongside with Doctor’s Order made it seem like all the holiday desserts of the world had gathered together in one dish.

It is a night to remember and the charm of both the restaurant and all of the eclectic settings ranging from large bolts as napkin holders, medicinal jars, wood and white plates created a true Bohemian experience and Bo Beau’s has the perfect combination of presentation, phenomenal food and an elegant, yet casual atmosphere to soak it all in.

Bo Beau’s is a full service restaurant from the inside to the outside and a bar that serves an extensive array of drafts and cocktails. Located at 8384 La Mesa Blvd., Bo Beau Kitchen + Garden is closed on Mondays and opens for dinner at 4:30 p.m. It is an experience that you do not want to miss out on. It has its first location in Ocean Beach, but other than a couple of signature dishes, the menu and chefs are different. So if you have visited the first location, this one is a completely new experience, with new food and unique atmosphere.

Reservations are highly recommended as the place was packed on a Wednesday night with solo diners, couples, parties and groups.

Bo Beau is a collective of the Cohn Restaraunt Group, Michelle Kveen and Chef Deborah Scott.
