Two Santee brothers were given long terms in state prison Friday for beating a homeless man to death in 2016 in the San Diego River bottom in Santee.

Austin Larry Mostrong, 22, received 20 years to life in prison for his guilty plea to second-degree murder for the slaying of George Lowery, 50, who was found hogtied and under plywood boards on April 24, 2016.

A Lake Murray man pleaded guilty Jan. 3 to second-degree murder in the 2016 shooting death of his girlfriend who was the mother of his infant son.

Rodrick Lamar Harris, 33, admitted to killing Vanessa Marie Bobo, 29, who was shot twice around 1 a.m. on Oct. 12, 2016 in their apartment in the 6400 block of Lake Arrowhead Drive.

A prosecutor confirmed Dec. 29 a case involving the stabbing death of a 19-year-old man in an El Cajon park is a gang related case.

Kyle Chawin Khamphan was stabbed Dec. 12 at 750 East Park, and he later died at Grossmont Hospital. A 17-year-old boy was also stabbed and was hospitalized. Another person also had minor injuries.

Richard James Gunner, 24, of Santee, was given an April 4, 2018 trial date in the murder of Brandon DeGuzman, 21, who was shot to death outside his El Cajon home in 2016.

Gunner was held to answer for murder following a preliminary hearing conducted by El Cajon Superior Court Judge Robert Amador on Dec. 14.

DeGuzman was found deceased on Sept. 24, 2016 at 6:30 a.m. on a sidewalk in the 500 block of Danny Street in unincorporated El Cajon. He had been shot in the face.

Derrick Jefferson Spurgeon, 38, of El Cajon, pleaded not guilty Dec. 14 to accessory after the fact in a bizarre murder in which a man’s body was found in a 55-gallon drum in San Diego Bay.

Timothy John Cook, 52, of Chula Vista, pleaded not guilty to murder in the death of Omar Medina whose body was found Oct. 12 in the drum and it had been weighted down.

Deputy District Attorney Cherie Somerville told Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Theodore Weathers that Medina had been stabbed 66 times.

A judge ordered a driver Dec. 5 to stand trial for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the death of Spring Valley resident Gregory Scott who crashed into the driver’s abandoned Jeep on a freeway.

David Armando Olvera, 30, was also ordered to trial for hit and run with death, and two counts of injuring two other drivers who also crashed into the Jeep that was left without lights in two traffic lanes.

A Santee man faces a Feb. 7, 2018 preliminary hearing on a charge of assault with a firearm in the wounding of an acquaintance.

Gracy Alan Neel III, 53, is also charged with possession of an assault weapon in the Oct. 30 incident in the 9800 block of Shirley Gardens Drive in Santee near Santana High School.

A Spring Valley man, Osvaldo Lopez, 35, has pleaded not guilty to killing a National City father on Nov. 14, and a preliminary hearing date will be set on Dec. 8.

Ricardo Sales, 30, was shot multiple times and killed at 6 p.m. at the intersection of Donax Avenue and Florence Street in Imperial Beach. He is the father of two children.

A Lakeside man was sentenced Nov. 14 to 24 years to life in prison for killing an acquaintance and attacking an inmate while in jail.

Lance Alyn Benson, 31, was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison for fatally stabbing Trammel Joseph Rizzuti, 35, of El Cajon, whose body was discovered April 24, 2016 by a newspaper delivery person on a sidewalk in the 10400 block of Aquilla Dr. in Lakeside.

Anthony Raymond Rivers, 30, of La Mesa, has pleaded not guilty to fatally stabbing a 19-year-old man in National City in 2005.

Rivers was arrested Oct. 16 for the April 9, 2005, slaying of Luis Vazquez following a long investigation by National City Police. Rivers was arrested in the 4500 block of Avocado Blvd. in La Mesa.
