East County may not be the track and field powerhouse of San Diego, but it has its share of standout athletes.

Seniors David Leber and Dylan Coleman of Granite Hills hold the top spots in San Diego rankings for discus and high jump. Leber’s PR for the discus is 163’5, a mark he acquired at the Eagle’s meet against Mount Miguel on Mar. 29.

Coleman not only leads San Diego Section with his 6’5 high jump, but also claims the top stop in the Grossmont Conference in the 110 meter hurdles with a 15.22 PR. He is ranked fourth in the 300 meter hurdles and also runs on the 4×400 relay team.

Coleman’s brother, Wesley is on top of the Grossmont rankings for pole vault at 13’0 and 4th in long jump with a 20’5 PR.

Granite Hills also boasts a competent distance runner who is currently trouncing East County competition in the 3200 meter and the mile: Brady DeHaven. He has set the time to beat in the 3200 meter at 9:30.20, and is second in the 1600 (4:28.87).

On DeHaven’s heals in the 3200, and setting the pace for the conference in the mile (4:23.95) and half mile (1:59.49) is Steele Canyon senior Matt Scarlett.

Other athletes of note are Mount Miguel senior Justice Chima and El Capitan junior Yaphet Yokley.

Chima is first in the 200 meter (22.70) and is running the 100 meter in 11.16, just behind Steele Canyon’s Marvin James (11.13).

Yokley is first in the conference for long jump, setting his mark at 22’1.5, third in the triple jump (40’1) and fifth in the 110m Hurdles (15.79).

On the girls’ side of the track, West Hills is the school to watch, especially when the sprints begin. First and second place in the 100 meter and 200 meter are jealously guarded by seniors Jordan Earl and Catherine Widay.

Earl holds the top spot in both, with a time of 12.38 in the 100 meter and 25.91 in the 200 meter. Widay comes in close behind in both with 12.76 in the 100 meter and 26.65 in the 200 meter.

Notably, the Wolfpack has an interesting sister duo in the throwing ring. Senior Briana Atuatasi and freshman Brandy Atuatasi fall right next to each other on the rankings for shot put and discus, and place consistently in the top four. Miracle Maseuli of Mount Miguel holds first in both. West Hills senior Devyn Samson joins her teammates in the top four for both shot put and discus.

Distance is ruled by Grossmont’s senior, Lisset Dominguez, who is crushing the 800 meter with a 2:25.90 PR and the 3200 meter with a best time of 11:50.51. She is fourth in the rankings in the mile.

The hurdle queen this year is an unexpected rising star, Helix freshman Audrey Kull. She is top of the standings in both the 100m hurdles (15.78) and the 300m hurdles (48.15).

El Capitan junior Emily Ruff is chasing Kull’s times in both categories, bringing up second with a 0.15 millisecond difference in the 100m hurdles.
