La Mesa’s newest barber shop, Sport Clips Haircuts gets warm welcome from community
Amidst the teeming abundance of hair cutting establishments in La Mesa, the newly opened Sport Clips Haircuts delivers a refreshingly novel barbershop experience aimed to please a distinctly sports centered clientele. Yet, it is not the vision one may conjure of a typical barbershop. Large flat screen TV greets clients in the reception and waiting area is available for patrons, adding to the sports’ orientated atmosphere.
“We have additional TVs mounted in each hair-cutting station and clients have enjoyed following the excitement generated by our very own Chula Vista’s Little League team while getting a precision cut,” owner Cammie Formo said, amid a growing gathering of local dignitaries that had come to attend and support Hair Clip’s official Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Aug. 21.
“We’re very excited by the turn-out and the warm welcome that we’ve received from this community”, said Formo, adding that the franchise, with more than 1,000 locations, was hers and her husband’s very first business venture.
“We opened on Aug. 10 and 83 clients that showed up. We launched a campaign of mailers aimed at more than 10,000 households offering introductory free haircut coupons to clients in this community and the response was very exciting,” co-owner Chris Formo said. “One of my goals is to get involved in this community. We want to do our part to fundraise with local schools, principals and PTAs. I’ve been a kindergarten teacher with the San Diego Unified School District and want to reach out to schools in this community.”
Miguel Parada, a representative from Senator Joel Anderson’s office said, “I’m here to recognize Sport Clips for their grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony and will be presenting a certificate to the owners.”
La Mesa Chamber of Commerce President Mary England said the new shop is a perfect marriage of upscale service for men.
“It’s centrally located and we’re very excited that the owners chose their first venture in La Mesa,” she said. “Our community welcomes this new experience for men.”
Shop manager Annie Lindsley said that although the business centers on a sports theme, they welcome females as well.
“I love this place and location and today is a very exciting day,” she said. “We’re overjoyed by the wonderful turn-out for the ceremony and the feeling of being welcomed in La Mesa. Our patrons can indulge in following their favorite sports while getting services that include steam towels, scalp massages and shoulder relax massages.”
In the adjoining area of the shampoo stations, the lighting is kept soft and the atmosphere is spa-like.
“Each shampoo chair has built-in heated massage and we use natural and therapeutic products such as tea tree oil shampoos and conditioners. Patrons can enjoy a full VIP treatment,” said Lindsley.
La Mesa City Councilmember Dr. Mark Araposthathis expressed his enthusiasm for the new business and said that he would love to patronize the facility for a beard trim and scalp massage.
Adding to the excitement of the many guests and local dignitaries were fellow city council members Ernest Ewin and Christine Alessio.
First time client Michael Casarrubia said his visit was an “awesome experience” and that he would gladly return.
“I work in this area and am a sports fan. This place has great prices and service,” Casarrubia said.
Sport Clips is located at the Vons La Mesa Springs Shopping Center next to Round Table Pizza.
